Using your smartphone to control your hearing aids – remotely

GN ReSound

Millions of people around the world have hearing difficulties. In most cases, problems arise as one gets older and the genes are disposed for a quicker hearing loss. However, many are born with hearing difficulties or start having problems early in life.

The development within hearing aids follows the same track as many other technology areas, ‘increasingly smaller and better’ and the Danish company GN ReSound has been a driving factor in that development for 70 years. The GN ReSound Group has subsidiaries in 23 countries and distributors in another 60 markets. With approximately 3,000 employees, the Group ranks among the leaders in its industry.

Smartphone remote control

At the end of 2012, GN ReSound placed a new milestone in its history of hearing aids when they launched the ReSound ControlTM app. Connected to the hearing aid via a new version of the ReSound UniteTM Phone Clip+ accessory, the app turns the smartphone into a remote control for the hearing aids. Features include easy adjustment of volume, choosing sound programs and more.

“What we now have put into the hands of our customers is a world’s first. No other manufacturer has been able to bring a similar product to the market. So naturally we are quite proud of the fact that we have been able to combine our hardware products with a mobile solution in this way. We are certain, it will be helpful to our hearing aid customers”, says Lars Lindqvist, VP Software Development at GN ReSound.

When deciding to build the remote control app  GN ReSound also decided to partner with Trifork to develop the user interface, integrate with the hardware and make the solutions available in AppStore and Google Play.

Lars Lindqvist explains: “We did not just want a working app, we needed an app that would live up to our innovative reputation in the market. In order to achieve this, we brought in Trifork and their expertise in mobile app development. We had a clear picture of the functionality we wanted and in a series of iterations and prototypes, the visual design and usability were agreed upon”.

Integration of devices

For GN ReSound, being able to solve real hearing problems in their customers’ everyday lives is paramount. With the ReSound Control app, hearing-aided people can use a smartphone to control their hearing aids in a manner that is elegant, intuitive, and – best of all – absolutely discrete. Because it is not just about delivering a hearing aid. It is about delivering a hearing system that allows the user to communicate, interact and stay connected on an equal footing with everyone else. Those are key factors to driving user preference. As part of the hearing industry’s most complete and advanced wireless hearing system, the ReSound Control app will help do just that.

Lars Lindqvist concludes: “When handling ongoing design, different development teams, handware production plans, certifications, etc. all at the same time, you really need people who bring a positive appoach and a desire to work together. Trifork did just that”.
