FMK 1.6.0 introduces a new user interface and marks another milestone in a more than 20-year collaboration

The Danish Shared Medication Record, known in Danish as det Fælles Medicinkort (FMK), version 1.6.0 is now available in the test environment. version 1.6.0 is now available in the test environment. The release introduces a new user interface and new functionality for FMK, supporting the continued development of one of Denmark’s core national digital healthcare solutions. 

The release was marked together with the Danish Health Data Authority (Sundhedsdatastyrelsen) and the many people who have contributed to the project. 

What is FMK 1.6.0? 

Key improvements in FMK 1.6.0 include: 

Improved dosage instructions, making medication regimens clearer and more consistent across healthcare systems. 

Support for intravenous (IV) treatment, enabling better handling of IV medication, particularly in hospitals and home-based care. 

Enhanced management of PRN (“as needed”) medication, providing clearer rules for how these prescriptions are recorded and interpreted, including by municipal home care services. 

Medication administration records, enabling municipal care systems to report when medication has been administered. This gives authorised healthcare professionals a shared and up-to-date view of a patient’s medication status and supports better coordination of care.  

Secondary dispensing, allowing pharmacies, care facilities and other authorised providers to dispense only part of a prescribed medication supply when a clinician has assessed that the patient is unable to manage the full supply independently. 

Medication administration records, enabling municipal care systems to report when medication has been administered. This gives authorised healthcare professionals a shared and up-to-date view of a patient’s medication status and supports better coordination of care.  

Secondary dispensing, allowing pharmacies, care facilities and other authorised providers to dispense only part of a prescribed medication supply when a clinician has assessed that the patient is unable to manage the full supply independently. 

Improved date handling, with clearer definitions and use of treatment and dosage dates to ensure consistent interpretation across systems. 

Preferred pharmacy, enabling citizens’ preferred pharmacy to be specified and used where appropriate. 

Updated dispensing authorisations, introducing new types of dispensing basis and clearer rules for what constitutes a valid authorisation for dispensing medication at pharmacies. 

Track and trace capabilities, supporting improved traceability of medicines throughout the medication process. 

A collaboration spanning more than 20 years 

For Trifork Digital Health, the release also represents another milestone in a collaboration with the Danish Health Data Authority that has lasted for more than two decades. 

Throughout that period, FMK has evolved alongside the Danish healthcare system. At the same time, the partnership behind the solution has matured through continuous collaboration and shared responsibility. 

Building national healthcare infrastructure together 

During the release event, Lars Seidelin, Head of Medicine and Collaboration, at the Danish Health Data Authority, reflected on the collaboration behind FMK. 

According to Lars Seidelin, the partnership between the Danish Health Data Authority and Trifork Digital Health has become even stronger over the past year through greater transparency, open dialogue and a shared approach to solving complex challenges. 

“We are not separate entities. We are building this together.” 

He emphasised that successful national healthcare solutions depend on close collaboration, where challenges are addressed jointly and where all parties respect the time, expertise and resources invested across the project. 

Why collaboration matters 

Developing and maintaining national digital healthcare infrastructure requires close cooperation between public authorities, technology partners and healthcare stakeholders. 

Solutions such as FMK are shaped through continuous dialogue, technical expertise and a shared commitment to meeting the needs of healthcare professionals across Denmark. 

FMK 1.6.0 reflects that approach. It is a new release with new functionality, built on more than 20 years of collaboration between the Danish Health Data Authority and Trifork Digital Health.

Trifork Digital Health develops and maintains digital healthcare solutions in collaboration with public authorities and healthcare organisations. We have contributed to the development of the Danish Shared Medication Record (FMK) for more than 20 years and continue to support the evolution of national digital health infrastructure in Denmark.
