Salling Group is one of Denmark’s largest retail groups, employing over 50,000 people across chains like Føtex, Bilka and Netto. With more than 32,000 shop-floor employees working in supermarkets throughout Europe, Salling Group needed a new people-focused app that would increase staff retention and add value to the customer shopping experience.
Salling Group’s store app, built in-house over 16 years ago, had become outdated and difficult to maintain. Employees were relying on personal smartphones and external tools to look up product data. Key challenges included:
With a need to redesign from the ground up, Salling Group turned to Trifork to help rethink the solution using Design Thinking.
Trifork led the early innovation phase, including:
“We’ve empowered our employees with a tool that’s faster, smarter, and made for how they actually work. This is what modern retail should feel like.”

Senior Business Process Manager & Product Owner, Salling Group
The new solution is called the MyStore app. Running event-based through SAP Business Technology Platform, the app draws together both local inventory information and data from across the Salling Group network, putting immediate access to a comprehensive, up-to-date inventory in the hands of shop-floor employees.
Now staff can scan a product using the app on their devices to see if it’s in stock in that store or check stock at nearby stores. Before, staff would have asked a colleague or used their own smartphones to check.
The real game-changer is the integration of planogram data, a visual map of shelf layouts which shows instantly where a product is located – down to the exact aisle and shelf – as well as which items are displayed nearby. This has proven to be especially useful for new employees, who may not be familiar with store layouts, who can now guide customers more accurately and faster than before.
As well as improving the user-experience, Salling Group has seen real business value from the new app. It was developed to be used on the existing PDA handsets that staff already had, thus avoiding a big investment in new hardware, saving millions in euros. Plus, the app rollout required very little on-boarding (just a short explainer video for store managers), meaning Salling Group fulfilled its zero-training time ambition.
Salling Group chose Trifork for our proven Design Thinking expertise, ability to co-create with users, and capacity to rapidly translate insights into validated concepts.
Our collaboration empowered Salling Group’s internal teams to take ownership of development, with a solid foundation in inclusive design and smart architecture.
