The Background
Danske Spil, Denmark’s national lottery and gambling operator, set out to modernize its casino app offering,a core digital product alongside its highly popular Lotto platform. The existing casino app, developed by a previous vendor, functioned mainly as a simple catalog of games, lacking both modern UX features and personalization. Looking to elevate the player experience and align with its responsible gaming values, Danske Spil initiated a competitive tender to find a new partner capable of building a more engaging, secure, and dynamic app experience.
Trifork was selected as a key implementation partner, contributing Android development expertise to a broader cross–functional collaboration that included multiple Trifork units, freelancers, testers, and Danske Spil’s internal teams. The project officially kicked off in May 2023 with the goal of delivering a fully reimagined app in just under a year.
The Need
Danske Spil’s vision was clear: develop a next–generation casino app that was not only more visually playful, but also significantly safer and smarter for users. The app needed to incorporate responsible gambling features, such as in–app time tracking, session alerts, and access to support resources,to actively protect players and encourage healthier play habits. At the same time, the app needed to feel personal: dynamic content, regional recommendations, favorites, and gameplay suggestions tailored to each user.
To create this enriched experience, the app had to support smooth animations and custom transitions, delivering a polished and interactive UI. Importantly, it had to work seamlessly across both iOS and Android platforms, while overcoming the challenge of inheriting a design made by a third party, with little developer input, which added unexpected complexity to the implementation phase.
The Approach
To meet Danske Spil’s requirements for both innovation and broad device compatibility, Trifork Smart Enterprise chose a future-proof mobile architecture. The iOS version of the app was developed using SwiftUI and Swift, while the Android version leveraged Jetpack Compose and Kotlin. These modern frameworks not only ensured high performance and great UX but also allowed the solution to support devices dating back eight years, far beyond industry norms.
Our team followed contemporary architecture patterns such as MVVM, coordinator, and repository patterns, ensuring clean, maintainable code. Early in the project, special focus was placed on building reusable core components, laying a scalable foundation for continuous development. This enabled smooth transitions for future features and long-term product evolution,an approach aligned with Trifork’s commitment to lasting business value through technology.
The Results
Despite initial delays caused by test data inconsistencies and evolving requirements, the final product exceeded expectations. Danske Spil was particularly impressed with the close, collaborative way Trifork worked—with weekly onsite presence and direct access to developers, a rare setup for external partners. This proactive model fostered trust and led to faster decision, making.
The app now serves as a stable platform for future digital ambitions. While final impact figures are still being collected, anecdotal feedback highlights improved internal workflows and customer satisfaction. Danske Spil has retained Trifork for ongoing maintenance and new feature development and is currently engaging with our team on other potential projects, including a tender on their Lotto platform. This continued partnership is a testament to the value and reliability delivered through the collaboration.
