Meeting Cross-Border Needs with Compliant Innovation

Swisscom had already launched a digital signing solution for customers in Switzerland via the My Swisscom app. This process included robust identity verification steps, ID scanning, selfie capture, and background checks to enable Qualified Electronic Signatures (QES) under Swiss and EU regulation.

However, the solution was not accessible to users outside Switzerland or to users without access to the Swiss app store. As international banks and enterprises increasingly sought digital onboarding and signing capabilities for foreign clients, this limitation became a strategic gap.

Strategic Requirements for International Trust Expansion

To meet growing international demand, Swisscom needed a compliant, standalone digital signing solution that could be distributed through international app stores. The platform required a fully integrated identity verification and certificate issuance workflow, along with a backend architecture decoupled from Swisscom’s core telecom infrastructure.

A fast, high-trust rollout was essential, particularly for regulated industries like banking, where cross-border legal compliance is critical. Above all, the solution had to meet stringent Swiss and EU data protection and trust service regulations. Beyond these technical needs, the project also served a larger strategic goal: to position Swisscom as a leading player in Europe’s rapidly evolving digital trust ecosystem.

From Trusted Developer to Strategic Partner

Swisscom and Trifork have a long-standing collaboration dating back to 2016, working on projects such as secure document storage, in-store identification, and mobile onboarding.

When Swisscom began planning a new international digital signing solution, the decision to partner with Trifork came naturally reinforced by personal recommendations and a shared track record of trust and delivery.

Trifork brought more than technical execution. From the first exploratory calls, they challenged assumptions, helped refine requirements, and acted as a strategic partner. Their ability to provide end-to-end expertise, from app development and middleware to hosting, UX, and compliance, enabled Swisscom to move with confidence and speed.

Building a Full-Stack Platform for Trusted Digital Signing

What began as a mobile app concept quickly evolved into a comprehensive, full-service platform for digital signing. Trifork delivered a robust mobile application that enables compliant electronic signing using Qualified Electronic Signatures. This was supported by middleware that seamlessly integrates identity providers, certificate authorities, and Swisscom Trust Services. The solution also included secure, Swiss-hosted cloud infrastructure designed with minimal data retention, as well as expert consulting on compliance and system architecture throughout the project lifecycle.

The platform supports advanced onboarding processes, including passport and NFC-based identity verification, and is fully aligned with Swiss and EU trust and data protection standards. With its user-friendly interface and modular, future-ready architecture, the solution positions Swisscom to scale its digital trust services internationally.

Accelerating Market Readiness and Strategic Growth

The solution went from concept to production in under eight months. It is now being integrated into Swisscom’s broader infrastructure, and its availability outside Switzerland strengthens Swisscom’s international trust portfolio.

Key results include:

  • Launched on time within a tight delivery window,

  • Fully compliant with Swiss and EU trust frameworks (eIDAS, ZertES),

  • Enabled international go-to-market readiness for digital signing services,

  • Reduced internal development dependency through externalized infrastructure,

  • Supports high-trust use cases like digital bank account onboarding,

  • Built with future extensibility, including lighter onboarding flows and reusable identity credentials.
