Challenge

At Vestas, more than 80.000 wind turbines all over the world are serviced by Vestas’ 10.000 field service technicians. Service is a rapidly growing business area at Vestas, and field service is turning into a corner stone of their sustainable energy business.

A wind turbine is a complex piece of machinery with many small parts. In order to streamline the servicing of the turbines, Vestas was looking for an easy and intuitive way of creating a complete overview the parts and tools that a service technician would need to execute a work order.

 

Solution

With Parts and Tools, every service technician is offered a full overview of required materials and tools needed to fulfil a work order. The iOS app brings SAP inventory information into the palm of the hands of the technicians, and the technicians are able to sign off on received materials, consumed materials and the return of materials in a few swipes. Returning materials suddenly becomes a smooth and easily completed task that substitutes the longer and more complex SAP process.

The Parts and Tools app sports a highly intuitive user interface that enables registration of ingoing and outgoing materials with the scan of a barcode – and it makes it easy to transfer materials from one location to another while updating inventory information automatically.

Parts and Tools is best practice native mobile development, and it is part of ONE FieldService, a suite of task-at-hand oriented apps that empower Vestas’ employees to swiftly and efficiently execute tasks while providing relevant information in its appropriate context. It is a tailored solution optimized for better performance and user experience on the iOS platform, mixing the SAP Fiori/Apple Human Interface Guidelines for the optimal user interface design.

Another essential part of My Task is the Service Inspection Forms. This functionality allows up to five technicians to work on the same inspection form simultaneously, as they are completing services checks on wind turbines. They are all able to add comments and pictures to the inspection form to ensure a thorough yet efficient service process.

Parts and Tools is a central part of Vestas’ modern high performing mobile iOS platform that builds on SAP Plant Maintenance – offering replication of data to SAP Cloud Platform. Utilizing of SAP Cloud Mobile Services, we are able to provide offline data to mobile devices operating in remote areas of the world. SAP Cloud Platform mobile service (SCPms) allows for easy onboarding, push notifications and offline capabilities.
